One of the most important parts of getting better audio for your video is to get the microphone closer to your subject. A microphone picks up what it is closest to. The microphone mounted on your camcorder just isn't the answer to better audio, that is unless you want to be recording the sounds of your operator and the sounds of the camcorder's humming motor etc. The fancy shotgun mics that you see on field news rigs are for the audio of last resort. That is, if everything else fails to get it, at least they have some ambient sound. So why would the cheap on-camera microphone on your camcorder be your first choice? To use a good professional microphone with your consumer type camcorder, the first thing you will encounter is that the microphone and the camcorder use different connectors. There is more that is different than just that. Do not just wire up an adapter. You want a good transformer between them.
